UNDP and the UN
The UN in Bahrain is headed by a Resident Coordinator who is responsible for the official UN team and presence in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Resident Representative of UNDP in Bahrain, H.E. Mr. Amin El Sharkawi is also the UN Resident Coordinator, simultaneously directing and coordinating the functions and activities of all other UN Agencies, including the non-resident UN agencies in the Kingdom. The UNCT in Bahrain is composed of UNDP, UN Environment, UNIC, UNIDO, WMO, UNESCO, UNHABITAT, UNHCR, UNFPA, UNICEF, World Health Organization, UNODC.
The UN RC is the designated representative of the Secretary General for development operations and leader of the United Nations Country Team. The RC reports to the Secretary General through the UNDP Administrator.
The Resident Coordinator assumes overall responsibility for the operational and development activities of the United Nations system carried out at the country level in conformity with the objectives and priorities of the government, and mandates and objectives of the United Nations system organizations.
The RC acts as an advocate for the United Nations and is tasked with promoting and supporting effective dialogue and interaction between the UN development system and the government’s policy-making and coordinating mechanisms, and those of NGOs.
UNDP: Practical work has been conducted in support of key national strategies including National Education, Social Development and Environment strategies. Key national institutions including the Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Court, have received technical and capacity development support. Other important projects include the political empowerment of women, supporting the Bahrain Institute for Political Development and provision of support in globalization and trade.
