Efficient Air Conditioning Workshop Held

An awareness seminar entitled "The Energy Efficiency of Air-Conditioners" was conducted today under the auspices of the Minister of Industry,Trade and Tourism His ExcellencyZayed bin Rashid Al Zayani and Undersecretary of Commerce Affairse Nader Khalil Almoayyed and in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme and the Sustainable Energy Unit.

 

His Excellency the Undersecretary, in his speech, highlighted that the seminar complements the efforts of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism to implement the national plans for projects of sustainable energy and energy efficiency, noting the importance of holding such seminars to enrich the debate and exchange of views and suggestions in support of a strategy to reduce energy consumption. He added that such seminars promote cooperation between the public and private sectors with regard to energy efficiency in electrical appliances, particularly in air conditioners.

 

His Excellency Mr. Amin El Sharkawi, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, applauded the leadership of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the creation of a unit for Sustainable Energy at the Ministery of Electricity and Water Affairs. He also stressed the active role played by the industrial sector and suppliers in providing the latest technologies to the market, as the global trend of the application of energy efficient technology dramatically counted on these two important elements. He added that "The adoption of the measures outlined in the National Plan for Energy Efficiency depend on your support." His Excellency confirmed that the existence of programs and plans for the rationalization of energy efficiency would benefit Bahrain economically and environmentally, as well as create new jobs in new sectors. 

 

The workshop offered specialized sessions on several topics, including the identification of minimum standards for energy efficiency in air conditioning and desired benefits from the application of this specification, called "MEPS" (Minimum Energy Performance Standards). It also touched on testing air conditioners and issuing specifications certificates of conformity and card energy efficient appliances. In addition, it also highlighted international experience in this field, and the mechanisms codified for use in reducing the production of energy and investment costs in the methods and techniques designed to reduce consumption, especially with the increasing growth of energy as a result of urbanization and industrialization.

 

Minister of Electricity and Water Affairs His Excellency Dr. Abdul Hussain bin Ali Mirza emphasized the important role of the Sustainable Energy Unit (SEU), which was established in cooperation between the Minister of Electricity and Water and the United Nations Development Programme under Cabinet resolution no. 4/2238  in December 2014. He added that it was within its terms of reference to develop strategies and measures integrated planning of energy sources in the Kingdom, as well as the rationalization of energy and to raise efficiency in all sectors through coordination with all concerned parties. Finally, His Excellency Dr. Mirza stated that the unit has began since last October to attract experts for the purpose of formulating two plans and two national renewable energy and energy efficiency strategies of the Kingdom.

 

Participants of the seminar included experts in the field of energy efficiency and more than 50 representatives from government ministries and bodies and various economic institutions and businesses involved to provide the Bahraini market with air conditioning.
