Bahrain participates in Social Good Summit through UNDP and Social Media Club collaborationSep 17, 2017
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Social Media Club (SMC) celebrated the Social Good Summit in New York by holding an event at the UN House in Hoora on September 17, 2017. The event engaged 270 users online, who posted 2500 times and reached 1.1 million users with 8.7 million impressions.
In attendance were H.E. Mr. Amin El Sharkawi, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, and Mr. Ali Sabkar, Co-Chair of Social Media Cub. This year’s Social Good Summit theme is “Future in Focus” which discusses the intersection of technology and new media that has redefined our understanding of human progress.
UNDP partnered with the Social Media Club to host the event under the title “The Role of Social Media in Passing Knowledge”. Social media, youth and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were central themes of the session, which ran in parallel with this year’s Social Good Summit held in New York, and participants were able to view the opening session via livestream.
In his opening statement, H.E. Mr. Amin El Sharkawi highlighted the significance of social media and youth to development: “It is imperative for us not to lose any opportunity to bring youth to the forefront of development. With the rapid advancement of technology, the changing economy, and the upcoming challenges ahead, I am confident that the next generation will think of solutions, will follow the path to sustainable development, and will be champions of change.”
During his intervention, Mr. Ali Sabkar said, “It is our pleasure and honour at Social Media Club - Bahrain to be a strategic partner in supporting the United Nations’ efforts to promote sustainable development goals. And to harness the club's potential and its members' efforts to support sustainable development plans through the social media channels.
The Social Good Summit is a two-day conference examining the impact of technology and new media on social good initiatives around the world. The summit unites a dynamic community of global leaders and grassroots activists to discuss solutions for the greatest challenges of our time.
The hashtag used during the event #2030NOW, asks the question, "What type of world do I want to live in by the year 2030?" During the Social Good Summit, global citizens around the world unite to unlock the potential of technology to make the world a better place.
